SAIS BA/MA Program Application Information

Application Details 2009/2010

For students (with a preference toward declared International Studies Program Majors) with a clear intent to pursue an MA in international studies after graduation from Hopkins, the University offers an accelerated and competitive International Studies BA/MA Program drawing upon its resources at The Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), located in Washington, D.C. Selected students spend their junior year at the Homewood campus. Formal attendance at SAIS, either at the Washington or the Bologna campus, begins in what would have been the senior year. Although the BA is not awarded until the end of the fourth year, it is expected that most undergraduate requirements will be completed in three years so as to facilitate continuation towards the MA at SAIS. Affiliation with the Homewood campus ceases officially after the fourth year of the program. Financial assistance for the fifth year is thus determined by SAIS.

Application Procedure:

Our objective is to have approximately 18 applicants interview at SAIS for 8 places. Eight students receive confirmed acceptances including two students who get to go to Bologna for the first year. Two alternates are selected as well, but it is rare that they will have the opportunity to join the program. The total size of the interview pool is determined by the number and quality of the applicant pool.

To apply, please email the following documents to Professor Heisenberg (dheisenberg@jhu.edu) no later than January 4th 2010:

¨  A personal statement not exceeding 500 words on why you should be accepted to the BA/MA program and whether you would like to study in Bologna for the first year

¨  A transcript of classes taken to date

¨  A resume

Please note that SAIS looks for a minimum GPA qualification of 3.7, although all applications are considered.

Next Steps:

Following receipt of applications Professors Grovogui and Heisenberg will forward these applications to SAIS where the 18 interviewees will be chosen with input from Profs Grovogui and Heisenberg. The successful candidates will be notified that they have been selected for interview no later than January 25th 2010, the first day of classes for the spring term at Homewood.

The interviews will be held in Baltimore with Dean Wilson and Associate Dean Kahn from SAIS on Thursday, February 4th 2010. The selections will be finalized by March 1, 2010.
