East Asian Travel Grants For Students

Research Travel Grants
Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for intersession/summer travel grants of up to $1,500 to conduct research in East Asia, or receive training that will facilitate their ability to conduct research in East Asia.  Priority will be given to East Asian Studies majors and graduate students.

The application should include the following:

  • Application cover page
  • a 3-5 page research proposal, including the research question, an overview of existing scholarship, research methodology, travel location(s), local hosting institution, anticipated budget, and research output (e.g., seminar paper); and
  • Letter of recommendation from faculty advisor.

Deadline:  October 31 for intersession grant; March 15 for summer grant.  Submit all application materials to Mergenthaler 338 by 3 pm.

Conference Travel Grants
The East Asian Studies Program offers travel grants of up to $500 to undergraduate and graduate students who are presenting papers at professional academic conferences.  Submit a 500-word abstract of the paper, evidence of conference acceptance, anticipated expenses, other sources of funding, and name/e-mail of faculty advisor to eastasian@jhu.edu.  The Program accepts applications year round and typically extends five travel grants each academic year.

Summer Internship Grants
Through the generosity of alumnus Charles Robins, Johns Hopkins University offers funding for selected students to gain business experience through summer internships in East, Southeast, or South Asia.  Each award recipient will be granted up to $5,000 (prorated by week) with which to pay airfare and living expenses during the internship.  Award recipients have the option of earning one credit for completion of the appropriate academic work related to the internship with the approval of a faculty sponsor.  Internships must be a minimum of 10 weeks, and students are expected to develop their own internships.

Robins Eligibility:  Must be a full-time Hopkins undergraduate with at least two years of college-level schooling or the equivalent in a foreign language appropriate to the internship.

The application is typically due in mid-February.  Additional application information for the Robins Internship Grant is available from the Career Center.
